There can be little doubt that mining changes lives. Whether it is the deep underground gold mines in South Africa or the open pit cobalt operations in the DRC, it has an impact on countries, companies and communities.

In Africa, mining is welcomed because it brings socio-economic upliftment to communities through CSR initiatives, infrastructure development, much-needed service delivery, and a boost to a country’s coffers.

Yes, ultimately, a mine is a business and can only benefit stakeholders if it is profitable. That said, many companies and individuals set aside profits and are committed to ensuring that mining benefits those who are most in need.

That is why every year, Mining Review Africa publishes our Mining Elites in Africa yearbook.
