Women in Mining Day: Implats reaches 29% women in management

Implats has achieved its target of 29% women’s representation in management, well ahead of its original 2026 deadline. This milestone comes as the mining sector celebrates the International Day of Women in Mining (IDWIM) on June 15, a day dedicated to honouring the achievements and contributions of women across the industry.

The company’s success reflects a growing commitment within the mining sector to advance gender equality and build more inclusive workplaces. Implats now stands among the frontrunners in South Africa’s mining landscape, where women have historically been underrepresented. In 2018, women made up just 12% of the national mining workforce, but this number has been steadily increasing—from 11,400 in 2002 to 57,000 in 2018—signaling a shift in the industry’s demographic profile.

Globally, women continue to make up only about 12% of the mining workforce. However, progressive companies are raising the bar, with some achieving or surpassing 30% female representation in management and on their boards. These developments mark a promising trend toward greater diversity and inclusion within the sector.

Implats’ early achievement of its diversity target serves as a powerful example for the broader mining industry, which still grapples with the challenges of attracting and retaining women in technical and leadership roles. As the sector recognises IDWIM, the company’s progress underscores the vital role that women play in shaping the future of mining and driving long-term sustainability.

Celebrated annually on June 15, the International Day of Women in Mining is a global initiative led by International Women in Mining (IWiM). The day highlights the contributions, skills, and resilience of women in mining while advocating for a more inclusive, responsible, and sustainable industry. It also serves as a platform to reflect on the progress made—and the work that still lies ahead—to create equitable opportunities for all.
