Seriti CEO Mike Teke appointed chairman of FutureCoal

Seriti Resources Group CEO Mike Teke has been appointed chairman of the Global Alliance for Sustainable Coal (FutureCoal), effective August 12, 2025. He takes over from July Ndlovu, who has retired after steering the organisation through a period of change and heightened activism.

Teke is no stranger to the alliance, having chaired FutureCoal’s Southern Africa Chapter and played a central role in advancing its Sustainable Coal Stewardship (SCS) framework. The SCS is a 10-year, technology-driven roadmap designed to modernise coal operations, attract responsible investment, and deliver both economic and environmental gains.

In a video statement, Teke called the appointment an honour and stressed the need for global unity in the face of energy and supply security challenges. “Our mission at FutureCoal is to define a future where coal is understood as a strategic resource necessary to alleviate poverty and underpin multiple aspects of modern living,” he said.

“I want every investor, producer, technologist, and policymaker across our value chain to come out of the coal closet. Stop being silent supporters, stop apologising, and start leading. Now is the time to be bold, informed, and united in our purpose.”

Teke described the SCS framework as a practical tool rather than a theoretical concept, one that brings policymakers, financiers, and stakeholders together to support responsible coal use across industries.

“Now is the time to unite and lead the transformation that ensures this vital resource continues contributing to our global community responsibly and effectively,” he added.

Paying tribute to Ndlovu, Teke credited his predecessor with transforming FutureCoal from a traditional industry body into a forward-looking alliance. Reflecting on his tenure, Ndlovu said he was “immensely proud to have served our value chain during a pivotal period in FutureCoal’s history” and was “confident that under Mike’s leadership, in conjunction with our visionary and courageous Chief Executive Michelle Manook, FutureCoal’s influence and impact will continue to grow.”

Teke co-founded Seriti Resources in 2018 and holds a BA (Ed), BEd, BA (Hons) and an MBA. His career includes senior HR positions at Unilever, Bayer, BHP Billiton and Impala Platinum, before becoming a founding member and CEO of Optimum Coal from 2007 to 2012, and later its non-executive chairman until 2015.

He served as vice president of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 2011/12 and as president from 2013 to 2017. He chaired the Richards Bay Coal Terminal Board from 2012 to 2016, later remaining as a non-executive director and chair of its remuneration committee.

Currently, Teke is the executive chairman and controlling shareholder of Masimong Group Holdings and holds several non-executive chairmanships, including at Rolfes, Anchor Group, and the University of Johannesburg Council. He is also a non-executive director at ARB, Halewood, and Mouton Citrus.
