In pictures: 4IRinMining Seminar redefines the future of mining

The 4IRinMining Seminar returned on 24–25 July 2025 with renewed energy and vision, expanding into a two-day event that brought together leading minds in mining, technology, and sustainability. Hosted at the Wits School of Education in Johannesburg, the seminar centred on the theme: “Re-Inventing Mining: Building Competent, Safe & Sustainable Mines of the Future.”

The event featured a strong lineup of speakers and covered topics such as digital transformation, sustainability, regulation, and innovation in mining. Prof. Lynn Morris, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation, delivered the welcome message, followed by Zweli Ndese, President of AMMSA, who officially opened Day one.

Keynote speaker Nzama Baloyi from Sasol Mining emphasised the “Role of Leadership in Executing a Technology-Based Strategy for 4IR.” Other notable presentations included Johan Oelofse of DRA on engineering the interconnected mine and Francisco Baudrand of Enaex Africa, who led a technology showcase.

A key panel discussion, facilitated by Nonkululeko Mabusa Mosikare, tackled regulatory adaptation for smart mining technologies. Topics ranged from aligning legislation with AI and automation to ensuring cybersecurity and sustainable innovation.

Attendees of the 4IRinMining Seminar also enjoyed an engaging Expo Walkthrough, showcasing the latest innovations in mining technology and solutions.
