Data-driven approach transforms PDS technology

Proximity Detection Systems (PDS) have evolved from basic collision avoidance to intelligent safety tools that deliver real business value.

Speaking to Mining Review Africa, CEO Anton Lourens outlined how PDS technology has evolved over the past two decades.

“Initially, PDS was very one-dimensional, using single sensors and single sensing technologies,” Lourens explained. “As electronics and new technologies developed, we’ve been able to integrate multiple layers of sensing into fused packs. This gives mines richer, more contextual information about specific scenarios.”

Modern PDS now generates valuable operator and vehicle data, allowing mines to monitor operator behaviour, identify risks, and detect unsafe trends.

“By analysing this data, we can retrain operators, create reference material for change management, and ultimately improve the efficiency of PDS,” he said.

With connectivity and real-time data, mines can track fleets more accurately, spot bottlenecks, and optimise production.
