Championing women in mining: Tamara Qwatekana appointed GM of Mafube Coal

Mafube Coal has appointed Tamara Qwatekana as its new General Manager, effective 1 September 2025. The 50:50 joint venture between Exxaro Resources and Thungela marks a significant milestone, coinciding with South Africa’s Women’s Month in August—a moment that highlights the mining sector’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

With over 17 years of experience across underground and opencast operations, Qwatekana brings extensive technical expertise and leadership insight to her new role. She is a qualified Mining Engineer with a B-Tech degree from the University of Johannesburg, holds a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency, and has completed advanced leadership programmes at the University of Pretoria and North-West University.

Qwatekana is also a strong advocate for women empowerment, coaching, and mentorship. As former Chairperson of the South African Colliery Managers’ Association (SACMA) in Limpopo and the Northern Regions, she has been instrumental in nurturing young talent and opening pathways for women in mining leadership.

In her current role as Manager, Mining at Matla Mine, her dedication to performance, people, and progress has been widely recognised.

The company stated on LinkedIn that Qwatekana’s appointment marks a well-earned milestone as she begins her leadership journey at Mafube Coal, promoting change and inclusion across the sector.
