Harmony Gold reports another death

A fatal incident occurred at Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited’s Mponeng mine near Carletonville on the morning of Sunday, 26 October 2025.

The incident involved an electrician who conducted routine maintenance work. In a statement, Harmony said it extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and is providing support during this difficult time.

The gold mining company also said that safety remains Harmony’s foremost priority and a core value underpinning all operations.

A full investigation into the circumstances of the incident has been initiated, led by Harmony management in collaboration with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources [DMPR]. All relevant authorities and stakeholders have been informed.

This incident follows a series of fatal events at Harmony. This year alone, the company reported the death of an employee who sustained injuries in a fall-of-ground incident at its Mponeng Mine on 20 February 2025. Also in February this year, there were two separate fatalities at Doornkop Mine in Soweto, which led to a temporary suspension of blasting operations at the site.

At Joel Mine, near Theunissen in the Free State Province, three employees succumbed to their injuries sustained in a fall of ground accident.
